Your Checklist for «Pokémon Sword and Shield»: Are you Ready for Launch Day?

by Pascal Landolt November 12, 2019

Friday, November 15th can’t arrive soon enough for millions of Pokémon fans all around the globe: Because that’s when «Pokémon Sword and Shield», the newest generation of the popular game series, will finally be launched. It’s been nine long months since the game had been officially unveiled by «The Pokémon Company» and Nintendo. The launch will also mark the beginning of the 8th generation of Pokémon – following «Sun and Moon» which had been released 2016 as 7th generation.
In order for you to get going and discover the new «Galar» region right away, we at «Techgarage» have put together a checklist for you. After all, you’re gonna have to go and «catch’em all!».

1. Get your Nintendo Switch ready

«Sword and Shield» marks the first time that a mainline Pokémon-Game will be released for a home console. That’s why you’re going to need either a Nintendo Switch or a Nintendo Switch Lite in order to play the game. «Pokémon Sword» and «Pokémon Shield» will hit store shelves on November 15th, but the digital copy in Nintendos eShop is already up for pre-order and pre-download. That means if you order now, your game will be unlocked and ready to play by midnight, November 15.

Do do that, go to your Nintendo Switch’s Home Screen, open the «Nintendo eShop», log in with your profile and go to «Discover»: «Pokémon Sword» and «Pokémon Shield» are going to be prominently featured here. After paying for your purchase, you can go ahead and start the download of the software. As mentioned, the title will be unlocked automatically for you on launch day.

2. Decide between «Pokémon Sword» or «Pokémon Shield»

The game will release in two versions, Sword and Shield, which are mostly identical concerning content and storyline, but both versions will differ from each other by sporting version-exclusive Pokémon. After all, the goal is to catch Pokémon and trade them with your friends. All in all, there will be plenty of new and yet unknown pocket monsters waiting to be discovered.

Want «Sirfetch’d» in your team? – Pick «Sword». Prefer «Galarian Ponyta»? – Go for «Shield»!

Pokémon Sword for example will feature the legendary Pokémon «Zacian», whereas the legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Shield is called «Zamazenta». Other Pokémon will be exclusively available in one version or the other, too. If you want to add a «Sirfetch’d» to your collection, opt for Sword, whereas you should go for Shield if you want to own a «Galarian Ponyta». 3. Check out the new Starter Pokémon

One of the big decisions in every Pokémon trainer’s life is to pick between starter Pokémon at the very beginning of every game. As always, you’ll have to decide between three different Pokémon types. In «Sword and Shield», they are going to be:

  • The Grass-type Pokémon Grookey
  • The Fire-type Pokémon Scorbunny
  • The Water-type Pokémon Sobble

The new Starter Pokémon in «Sword and Shield» are called Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble.

A secret Nintendo has been hiding well so far is the final evolution of every one of these starter Pokémon. That means: We still don’t know what those three critters are going to evolve into once they’re fully grown up. Thus, we suggest you just pick the one you find the cutest.

4. Stock up on the newest Pokémon Trading Cards

The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is currently experiencing another hype cycle. In the past few months, Pokémon Trading Cards have become really popular again among young and old fans. That might partly be due to special sets like «Detective Pikachu» and «Hidden Fates» having been released this year. Pokémon trading cards have been traded on school playgrounds, at Pokémon Conventions and on the internet for 20 years now – and there’s no end in sight.

And with the release of the new, 8th Generation «Sword and Shield» games, a matching TCG product has already been announced: The so-called «Galar Collection» boxes. These collectors items not only feature the three new starter Pokémon Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble but in addition also a limited pin, a all-new «Pokémon V»-Card of either Zacian or Zamazenta and four Pokémon TCG Booster Packs. If you’d like to show your love for your cute new starter Pokémon by having it always by your side in cardboard form, make sure to visit our friends over at «CardCollectors.ch» and get your box.

Pokémon-FAQ: Important questions about «Pokémon Sword and Shield» answered

When will «Pokémon Sword and Shield» be released?

«Pokémon Sword and Shield» is going to be released on November 15, 2019 exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

What are the new Starter Pokémon in «Pokémon Sword and Shield» called?

Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble: These are the names of the three starter Pokémon from the 8th Generation, «Sword and Shield». You’ll be able to pick one at the very start of your adventure in the Galar region.

How many Pokémon will I be able to catch in «Sword and Shield»?

We’ll probably only have a definite answer to this question once we’ve completed the game. Either way, the games’ head developers Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori repeatedly stated that not all Pokémon from past generations will be included in the game. This news was met by a huge backlash from the die-hard Pokémon community. However, final word on how many – and which – critters we’ll be able to catch is still out.
