New patent hints at vertically folding Google phone

by Kevin Kyburz 03/15/2019

A recently filed patent suggests Google is considering releasing a foldable phone. As spotted by Patently Mobile, the patent shows a device that folds vertically and has a large hinge. The phone’s screen is on the inside of the device.

The vertical fold means a phone based on this patent would work in a completely different way to existing foldable devices by Samsung and Huawei—which both fold horizontally.

Although, Google isn’t the first company to think about a vertically folding device. Most recently, rumors have suggested Samsung and Motorola are considering a device that folds in this way.

Unfortunately, the patent reveals little else about what a potential Google foldable phone could be like.

Despite the patent, a Google foldable phone could still be some way off

Of course, a patent application is by no means a sign that Google has a foldable device in the works. However, it does—at the very least—show the company is thinking about the technology. Google has built foldable features into Android so, should it eventually decide to release a foldable phone, it could be well placed to do so.

Google would be unlikely to manufacture the foldable device. Previous Pixel phones have reportedly been made by Foxconn, LG, and HTC.

As a quick refresher, both Samsung and Huawei will release foldable phones in the near future. In addition, manufacturers including Xiaomi, LG, Oppo, and Motorola have all revealed that they have at least begun to think about releasing a foldable device.
