With that out of the way: After the first hype around Huawei’s newly announced and Mate X foldable phone has toned down a bit, all eyes are on the next big product launch. After all – the Huawei Mate X won’t hit the markets before Mid-2019.
But for March 26th, Huawei is already teasing an event in Paris, France. The teaser video posted on Huawei’s official Twitter account focuses heavily on zoomed-in landmarks in the french capital.
The Huawei P30 (Pro) will be unveiled in Paris
Also from the same post, we know the device unveiled will be called P30. And deviating from last year’s event, which brought us the P20 and P20 Pro, we might assume there’s going to be a P30 as well as a P30 Pro. Also – Huawei has always emphasized their «P-Series» to be Photography-centric. Thus the venue of the unveiling – Paris, the «city of light».
And while some instances claim to have «exclusive» insight on the purported P30 Pro – the device just casually lying around in a backroom at MWC – other instances claim these sightings are misleading and wrong. So much emotion around a yet-to-be unveiled product. Which got me thinking:
Now that we’ve established name, place and main feature of Huawei’s next product, let’s build a possible product around this skeleton of clues.
Is a Camera with a 10x-Zoom in the works?
What else do we know since MWC 2019 (Mobile World Congress Feb. 25 – 29) kicked off? There have been attempts to achieve extraordinary zooming skills on smartphones before. Oppo has brought working prototypes to the show – not once, but twice: Once in 2017 and now again this year. In 2017, the chinese manufacturer brought a nameless handheld device with a 5x optical zoom to Barcelona. This year, Oppo even doubled down on these zoom capabilities by showing off a mobile phone with 10x «lossless zoom» capabilities at their «Innovation Event 2019».
What both these «super zoom» phones have in common is that they incorporate a «periscope setup» for their zoom lens. This very setup supposedly works as follows: Light comes in through one lens, gets reflected by a mirror into an array of additional lenses, and then arrives at the image sensor, which sits perpendicular to the body of the phone.
Now let’s follow through: If Huawei wants to incorporate that kind of zoom (5x – 10x optical) into their newest P-Series smartphones, and Oppo has shown the way on how to make this technically feasible.
What would a Huawei P30 Pro with «Super Zoom» Camera look like?
How would a Huawei P30 Pro with «Super Zoom» capabilities look like? Here’s what we at «Techgarage» think:
++ Update 17:28 GMT: When it rains, it pours. Looks like some official shots of the P30 Pro have now also surfaced – which, if real, would mean we’ve been pretty accurate with our speculations ++
