Is Google going to unveil new Pixel Phones at I/O on May 7th?

Google has just released a teaser website promising that «On May 7, something big is coming to the Pixel universe.» Well – what do we make of that? The teaser video is all about the upcoming Marvel movie «Avengers: Endgame» and a new AR playmoji feature. We believe however, that there might even be a surprise unveil of a new variant of Google’s own Pixel phones.

Mid-tier Smartphones have already been leaked

It’s not really news that Google plans to release a mid-tier smartphone this year. We’ve seen leaks pointing in that direction for months now. Even the devices’ alleged specs have been found in Google’s own Store. If those specs turn out to belong to said mid-tier phones, we can expect a smaller version – let’s call that the Pixel 3a – to sport a 5,6-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. The bigger model, called Pixel 3a XL should then have a 6-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2160. Both versions are said to have a paltry 4 GB of RAM built-in.

Techgarage’s take

It seems a rather odd decision for Google to unveil those new smartphones at its I/O Developer Conference, which will be held May 7th in Google’s own Amphitheater in Mountain View. Normally, the focus at I/O is on Google’s software improvements with new features being introduced as well as a preview of the upcoming Android OS – which this year would be Android Q.
